IPL 2021: Auctions and Players to watch out for based on Player performance data

As soon as the IPL 2020 concluded in November with the Mumbai Indians retaining their championship in the final clash against the Delhi capitals, talks about the IPL 2021 began in full swing. The short period between the two seasons, a possible addition of two new teams, the possibility of a mega auction, and debates over the venue, the IPL 2021 has stayed in limelight for all the right reasons. Rumours that the BCCI is examining the possibility of allowing 50 per cent crowd attendance for the matches has made both the fans and the franchise owners rejoice alike. As allowing fans inside the stadium can bring back the fan-fest vibe which the tournament missed heavily in the concluded 2020 season, brands and sponsors are looking at this development with a keen eye. On Wednesday, the franchises announced the list of players that they have decided to retain and let go ahead of the mini-auction scheduled for February 18 at Chennai. The event saw many big names getting released from their franchises, making us look forward eagerly for the upcoming auction. The Chennai Super Kings, who were expected to release several players, released some big names such as Kedhar Jadhav, Harbhajan Singh, Murali Vijay and Piyush Chawla. Kedhar Jadhav’s release comes as no surprise as he failed to produce any match-winning performances in his 3-year stint at CSK. The right-hand batsman had a forgettable 2020 season in which he played 8 matches and scored only a total of 62 runs. Similarly, Rajasthan Royals has released their captain Steve Smith, and have announced that Sanju Samson, the young Indian talent, will lead their team in the 2021 season. Steve Smith, who scored a total of 311 runs including 3 half-centuries, is expected to become a hot sell in the upcoming auction. To make things interesting, the Kings XI Punjab have released a squadron of Overseas players including some big names such as Glenn Maxwell, Jimmy Neesham and Sheldon Cottrell, whereas the RCB has released a few big names such as Aaron Finch, Chris Morris, Shivam Dube and Umesh Yadav. Teams like CSK and RR are expected to go after these players in the auction to build their overall strength. On the one hand, as most teams went on a releasing spree, the Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals have retained most of the big names, apart from releasing a few retired players. These teams will be looking to put a great show just like they did in the 2020 IPL edition. The IPL 2020 edition, on its part, had created its fair share of records, nail-biting matches, and identified some new raw talents. Expectations are high on last season’s finds Rahul Tewatia, T Natarajan, Devdutt Padikkal and Varun Chakkaravarthy. With the start of the IPL 2021 months away, the teams have ample time in their hands to plan and work out their strategy. This auction will be an opportunity for them to tie up their loose ends.
