The first thing you should know before putting together your teams today is that this will be the third match played on the same deck at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). With the nature of the deck and the long straight boundaries, SCG is a venue that normally supports spin bowling; when you add the worn nature of the strip to it, we could see spinners having a field day. This makes Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga obvious choices and elevates Hasaranga to captaincy consideration. Your best chance comes from the England spin trio of Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali, and Liam Livingstone. They are only owned by 14%, 29%, and 31%, respectively, making them all high-quality differentials. Rashid can only contribute with the ball, whereas Livingstone and Moeen can both bat and bowl. The next player in the spotlight is Dhananjaya de Silva. He is in good form with the bat and will bowl at least a couple of overs with the opposition's middle order featuring three left-handers in Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, and Moeen Ali. This is a venue where full and good length pace variation specialists usually do well - enter Sam Curran. And Jos Buttler is clearly the first-choice wicketkeeper for the day. On a deck like this, we would also recommend bringing in Kusal Mendis, as wicketkeepers usually get enough points through catches, stumpings, and run outs to make a difference. There is a lot of value to work with Mendis when you combine some form with the bat and the advantage of opening the innings with the bat. You can select 8 of the 9 players discussed, with the 9th spot decided by a shootout between Moeen and Livingstone. Moeen is the better batter in these conditions, but Livingstone is more likely to bowl, making it something that can only cracked through a mixture of multiple combinations and luck. All you must do now is choose one of Mark Wood and Chris Woakes and two of Alex Hales, Dawid Malan, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and Charith Asalanka. There are arguments for and against both Wood and Woakes. While Wood has been the better bowler in the tournament and Sri Lanka is a team that struggles against raw pace even on decks that don't suit the bowling style, Woakes is better suited to the deck and bowls at the death. Given all of this, Woakes if England bowl first and Wood if Sri Lanka bowl first appears to be the best option. Hales ticks more boxes today than Malan, but keep in mind that he takes too many risks with the bat, hasn't faced Maheesh Theekshana before, and generally struggles against spin. Between Asalanka and Rajapaksa, the latter is more destructive, but the former bats higher up the order.
